This episode tells the tragic story of the 'bridge too far' and the ill-fated 'Operation Market Garden' - the Allied operation that was supposed to end World War Two in 1944. Montgomery's rather fanciful conclusion that Market Garden was '90% successful' was hardly supported by the facts. The operation was an unmitigated failure.

In August 1944 the Falaise Gap, south-east of Caen, represented an escape route for the German forces, who were in danger of being encircled by the advancing Allied troops. The fighting in the lanes and fields was intense, as the Allies battled hard to overcome determined resistance by some 80,000 German troops. The Gap was closed on the 19th of August, leaving only a small pocket of German resistance that was overrun several days later. The losses for the Germans were catastrophic.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was supposed to obviate the need for the grinding attritional battle that was the hallmark for the bloody fighting of Guadalcanal. The capture of this strategically crucial island in the Solomans, during which more than 25,000 Japanese lost their lives, was the key to the US victory in the Philippines which paved the way for the horrors or Hiroshima, Nagasaki and ultimately the defeat of the Japanese Empire.

The remarkable Soviet victory over the once mighty Japanese Kwantung Army in the mountains of Manchuria is one of the least known of the Second World War. During 1944, the Allies tried desperately to break through the German winter defensive line that blocked the advance to Rome. At the centre of the line was the heavily fortified town of Cassino, which was dominated by a sixth century Benedictine monastery. This imposing hilltop site became the subject of bitter controversy and a symbol of some of the most savage fighting of World War Two.

The story of the war in Scandinavia from invasion through resistance to liberation...
On April 9th 1940, German troops invaded Norway & Denmark. Both Scandinavian nations had sought to avoid becoming involved in the war in Europe - but they were too strategically important ever to be allowed to stay neutral. They would remain under the Jackboot until war's end.
BATTLEFIELD NORWAY & DENMARK tells the story of the war in Scandinavia from invasion through resistance to liberation, using much rare original combat footage.
It covers the original doomed British attempts to support Norway, with fierce Naval engagements and the landings at Narvik, and then the establishing of resistance fighters in both nations. Resistance groups would not only carry out daring acts of sabotage but also provide vital information on German troop and naval movements to the Allies. Exclusive interviews with the Director of the Norway Resistance Museum, Arnfinn Moland, and the museum's curator, Ivar Kraglund, provide a fascinating insight into the previously hidden world of the heroes of the Resistance.
Also covered are the daring British commando raids on Norwegian targets such as the Lofoten Islands, Bear Island (Bjornoya), Vagso and the Vermork Hydro electric plant where the Nazis were preparing 'Heavy Water' for their atomic bomb project.
Norway and Denmark were strategically vital because of their coastal waters. and this title also offers dramatic coverage of.' the offshore war, with the terrible losses suffered by the Arctic convoys en route to Russia, and the destruction of the mighty German battleship Tirpitz in a Norwegian Fjord.

The campaign in Tunisia saw the battles that finally ended the brutal war in the desert. The arrival of the British 1st Army gave the Allies a six-to-one numerical advantage in troops and a fifteen-to-one superiority in tanks, guns and aircraft. The Allied blockade in the Mediterranean also began to bite, making the beleaguered Germans short of fuel, food and ammunition. Eventually all German troops in Tunisia surrendered.

It was the most gruelling, the most harrowing, and in many ways the most tragic of all the battles fought in Europe during the Second World War. It was also the most international - soldiers of 16 countries fought and died there. It had become, too, a battle to be mulled over, puzzled out, and re-fought, not just by professional soldiers and military historians, but also by armchair strategists, for it is full of controversy: not least the bombing by the Allies of the historic Benedictine monastery on the summit of Monte Cassino.
But to the men who took part, the battle will chiefly be remembered for the mud and the cold, and above all for the hypnotic attraction of the great monastery itself - an all seeing eye, glowering down from the sheer hill and noticing everyone and everything.
Unique archive material of the battle from both sides has been utilised together with newly-filmed sequences of the rebuilt town and monastery, as well as dramatic eye-witness accounts from many of the surviving major participants.

December 1944 witnessed the last major German offensive of the Second World War. The Battle for the Bulge, as this campaign in the Ardennes forests of Belgium and Luxembourg is now more familiarly known, was the biggest single pitched battle of the Western Front - more than a million troops took part. It was Hitler's most desperate gamble of the War: he in face planned its every move.
It was the climax too, of the Allied invasion of Western Europe. But it was also a time of American humiliation, for it saw the largest mass surrender of U.S. forces of the whole European War - and a surrender second in size only to that at Bataan in the Pacific in 1942.
Because Hitler was banking on a quick victory, which he hoped would split the Allies and provide a respite in the West while he held off the Russian threat from the East, he ordered Germany's remaining film-stock and surviving cameramen to be lavished on covering the campaign. But when the plan failed, much of their efforts lingered unseen in library vaults, and even unprocessed in laboratory cellars, until brought to light for this documentary.

This absorbing programme examines the dramatic execution, in September 1944, of Field Marshal Montgomery's plan, codenamed operation "Market Garden". By this, all major river crossings in Holland were to be seized by the Allies in a single blow, to secure a bridgehead across the Rhine. This would lead to a take-over of the German industrial heartland of the Ruhr, and a decisive thrust towards Berlin. It was hoped that the defeat of Germany, and the end of the Third Reich, would soon ensue. However, the plan was only partially successful, and there were over 7,500 casualties.
This carefully researched account analyses the events leading up to the battle, the progress of the fighting, and the factors responsible for the Allied defeat. Contemporary film material (including glider landings, parachute drops and movements of men and equipment), photographs and sound recordings from British, German and Dutch sources, and strategic maps, all help to explain the course of this key battle of World War II.

During the Second World War the Atlantic Ocean became one of the most important scenes of conflict, if not the most critical. For six years nearly every existing class of ship from the countries involved took part in the fighting in some way.The conflict centred mainly around the endless columns of large Allied Convoys carrying supplies across the Atlantic, and the German U-boats, whose task it was to intercept and destroy them.
Huge surface ships such as the Bismarck, the Hood, the Scharhorst, the
Gneisenau, the Rodney and the King George V also played their part in the history of warfare in the Atlantic, as did aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers and numerous small escort ships.

The Battle of the River Plate (1956)
The Battle of the River Plate
is a gripping drama set at sea.
Ten days before the outbreak of World War II,
a powerful German battleship sails around the South
Atlantic destroying Allied merchant ships. Finally, the Allies learn of its
location and a trap is set, pitching British intelligence against a powerful military opponent..
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)
Roger Livesey, in a career-best performance (and a kind of Boris Johnson character for the first half of the 20th-century),
brilliantly
portrays a British officer, Clive Candy, through the trials and
tribulations of three wars, three loves and a lifelong friendship across enemy lines.
During the Boer War, Candy is sent to Berlin to trap a German spy.
There he befriends a German Officer, Theo (Anton Walbrook) who marries the girl (Deborah Kerr) Candy
is in love with. During the First World War, Candy
marries a girl who resembles his lost love and helps Theo - now a POW - to get repatriated.

- Booklet with information on the film, itts restoration and musical accompaniments.
The Battle of the Somme (1916) is one of the most successful British films ever made. It is estimated that more than 20 million tickets were sold in Great Britain in the first two months of release, and the film was distributed worldwide to prove Britain’s commitment to the First World War. It is the source of many of the conflict’s most iconic images.
The Battle of the Somme gave its 1916 audience an unprecedented insight into the realities of trench warfare, controversially including the depiction of dead and wounded soldiers. It shows scenes of the build-up to the infantry offensive, including the massive preliminary bombardment, coverage of the first day of the battle – the bloodiest single day in the British Army’s history – and depictions of the small gains and huge costs of the attack. As a pioneering battlefi eld documentary, the very concept of The Battle of the Somme outraged commentators on its release, inaugurating a debate about the on-screen depiction of combat that continues to this day. Its use of a staged sequence to represent the opening of the assault also set the scene for continuing controversy about the ‘truth’ of the documentary format.
