December 1944 witnessed the last major German offensive of the Second World War. The Battle for the Bulge, as this campaign in the Ardennes forests of Belgium and Luxembourg is now more familiarly known, was the biggest single pitched battle of the Western Front - more than a million troops took part. It was Hitler's most desperate gamble of the War: he in face planned its every move.

It was the climax too, of the Allied invasion of Western Europe. But it was also a time of American humiliation, for it saw the largest mass surrender of U.S. forces of the whole European War - and a surrender second in size only to that at Bataan in the Pacific in 1942.

June 6th 1944. D-Day was the greatest sea borne invasion in human history. By the end of the first day, almost 200,000 men had been landed ashore on the beaches. For the invasion to be a success, they desperately needed regular supplies.

Normandy had no large ports - and other ports along the coast were too well defended by the Germans to be stormed and seized. Land Warfare Technology.
This programme closely examines the development of land warfare and the effect it had on the conflict. When two enemy pilots shoot each other down over Ireland they are both captured as prisoners of war. During World War 2, neutral Ireland interned all soldiers, sailors and airmen, regardless of their nationality, captured on Irish soil. What they failed to mention was that they would put them all in the same camp...

Our pilots, Miles (Bill Campbell) and Rudi (Angus MacFadyen) are astonished to come face to face with each other at the entrance of the internment camp. Further surprises are in store as they discover that Commandant O'Brien (Gabriel Byrne) allows the prisoners out on day passes. They can enjoy a drink in the pub or a day out to the races as long as they give their word they won't escape.
