What is Die Neue Sachlichkeit?
- Die Neue Sachlichkeit (Ger. new objectivity) About 1918 a reaction
against Expressionism took place in Germany and the phrase die neue Sachlichkeit
was coined in 1923 to distinguish a new attention to realistic representation of
actual objects in a detailed way - thus also reacting against the muzziness of
Impressionism. An exhibition was held at Mannheim in 1925 under the Neue
Sachlichkeit label. The movement petered out, but the new feeling for the
subject is distantly related to Surrealism. dix; Magischer Realismus.
