In his attempt to catch the action of the moment, his ballet dancers and female nudes are in poses that make no attempt to conceal the subjects' physical exertions. His later pastels, like Danseuse Verte (Green Dancer, 1880) have an elegance unsurpassed by any of his earlier works.

Degas' mastery of oil pastel is evident in the free-flowing grace of this dancer rehearsing her performance. From her outstretched arm to delicate extended leg, the artwork -- here interpreted as a statue -- bespeaks true mastery. We are fortunate to have this masterful reproduction of Degas' famous oil pastel, Danseuse Verte (Green Dancer), because it adds a new dimension to our understanding of his artistry (see original picture).

Many reproductions are completed after the bronze castings. But this one is special because it retains the details and colors of the very first, original statue he ever showed -- the original completed in wax!

About the original artwork: After beginning to lose his eyesight after his fiftieth birthday, Degas became increasingly dependent on his sense of touch and so started to turn from painting to sculpting. Although during the last period of his life he hardly ever showed his work to anybody, he decided after working The Dancer for more than two years, to send his work to the Impressionist exhibition in Paris.

After he had carefully sculpted the body, he had the clothes custom made: the bodice, the net dancing skirt and the ballet shoes. On top of the bodice he then worked again with wax, so this was to become a solid part of the figure when it was cast in bronze. He expected a sympathetic reations from the audience, but they were at an utter loss. It was obviously too realistic. 'Mister Degas dreamed of an ideal picture of ugliness. The fortunate man! He has achieved it ...', a critic wrote. He was known as a painter and now he had designed something that seemed to laugh at all the traditional values of the art of sculpting, which was something the audience just could not understand.

After this experience Degas never exhibited any of his work again. Looking back, he was clearly ahead of his time and he had developed a degree of objective realism for which his contemporaries were not in the slightest bit prepared for.

For 10 years he sketched the young women training and then reused the sketches for new artworks during the next 40 years. The early rehearsal scenes were done in oil; and in 1878, he started using pastels for his dancers, nudes and horse-track scenes.

In his attempt to catch the action of the moment, his ballet dancers and female nudes are in poses that make no attempt to conceal the subjects' physical exertions. Just the same, in this example, the dancer here is in a moment of rest as she waits (see original picture).

The painting depicted in the second image at right shows a horse galloping prematurely onto the track while, in the background, a jockey is having the greatest difficulty keeping his horse under control. Although the horse is beautifully painted, Degas made the mistake of portraying the horse's legs as being raised off the ground. Eight years later, Eadweard Muybridge would show, in his famous series of photos of a galloping horse, that Degas' painting does not match up with reality.

A false start at Longchamps, the popular Parisian racetrack In around the middle of the 19th century, horse racing became very popular in France. Degas discovered the sport during a holiday in Normandy. Originally he painted and drew hunting and steeplechase scenes but, in around 1870, he became a frequent visitor to the popular Longchamps racetrack on the outskirts of Paris. Just as he had an eye at the opera for the world of dancers and singers behind the screens, Degas also showed the jockeys and horses before and after the race (see original picture).

Petite Danseuse De Quatorze Ans (Little Dancer of Fourteen Years) 1879-1881, is the only sculpture Edgar Degas chose to exhibit throughout his lifetime. He created a revolutionary piece breaking the stereotypical cold inanimate sculptures of his time. He made his dancer come to life. Although received with some disapproval because of its stark realism, it has become one of the most time honored, beloved sculptures around the world.
