From 1479 Ercole de'Roberti was active in Ferrara. Seven years later he was Court Painter to the Este family in Ferrera. He also worked with Francesca del Cossa in Bologna.
Influenced by Giovanni Bellini and by the Ferrarese painter Tura (c.1431-95).
Attributing his work is difficult as there may or may not have been a painter called Ercole di Giulio Cesare de'Grandi, who may or may not have died in 1531, who, if he existed, worked closely in style to Ercole de'Roberti.
