GIORGIONE
- Known as: Venetian Renaissance painter
- Born: c. 1477, Castelfranco Veneto, near Venice, Italy
- Full name: Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco
- Date of death: September or October 1510, Venice (plague)
-
Little is known about Zorzi da Castelfranco, universally known as Giorgione. Nor, for that matter, did he have a chance to leave us a great body of work. He was dead at 33 from the plague raging through Venice at the time and left us 25 attributed paintings. What we do know is that he was a fellow student of Titian under Giovanni Bellini in Venice. He worked in Venice and undertook various important commissions in oil and fresco.
In 1500, he met Leonardo da Vinci when the Tuscan master visited Venice. He was some 25 years older than Giorgione.
His works include: The Tempest, The Old Woman, and The Nude. He left only one drawing.
