A determined young woman (Wendy Hiller) sets off for the western isles of Scotland to marry her boss. He's old enough to be her father and she doesn't love him but he's rich and rich is what she wants to be, too. She knows where she's going. But virtually on the last leg of her journey impenetrable fog descends and she is unable to reach the island where her fiance is waiting for her. After the fog comes a storm and that, too, prevents her leaving the mainland.

In the meantime she has met a young naval officer (the brilliant and irreplaceable Roger Livesey) who is home on leave. He's obviously attracted to her, but she resists him because he doesn't appear to be rich and she's not prepared to be sidetracked by good-looking young men.

Thus begins a lyrical, even magical, story which mingles romance, suspense and comedy with a gentle.touch of the supernatural. As much as anything it examines the effect of time and place on people. The weather disrupts Hiller's plans, but it's the mysterious ambience of the countryside in which she is virtually marooned that makes her change them and realise that life has more valuable things to offer than money.

A small, lovely film, beautifully played and superbly photographed in monochrome, it has a quality, a kind of aftertaste, that lingers on in a way that is almost disturbing and yet wholly pleasurable.

Rather touchingly, Michael Powell chose the music from the film to be played at his funeral.
