She was born Ellen Jaclyn Smith on October 26, 1947, in Houston, Texas. After attending Trinity University and the University of San Antonio, the 5' 7" (1.70 m) brunette flourished as a model and cover girl. In 1973, she landed a job as a Breck shampoo model.
The following year she appeared in the woeful movie Bootleggers after bit parts since the late 60s on TV and in film.
In 1976, she was offered a chance to star in a new pilot for a planned television series, entitled Charlie's Angels (1976). The pilot was slick and the show was an instant hit when it debuted on September 22, 1976 on ABC. She stayed with the show through its entire 5 year run.
After the series came to an end, Smith went on to a busy career in made-for-TV movies, efficiently playing the title roles in Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy (1982) and Florence Nightingale (1985).
The same year she started her own line of clothing at K-Mart in 1985 which has turned out to be extremely successful.
In 1989, she returned to the weekly-TV grind as star of the mystery series, Christine Cromwell.
