The Signature packaging is uniformly beautiful, from the boxsets of Garbo to Cary Grant (the big boxset of his they released a few years back is jaw-droppingly gorgeous) and everything that is in-between.

This John Wayne release stands as a fitting tribute to this universally huge star of the 20th-Century. At 6ft4 he didn't need to look up to anyone; the world looked up to him. What a presence! He just filled the screen in everything he appeared in, marginlising his co-stars to the edges of the screen until they became an irrevelance. That is screen-acting; that is what makes a sar: presence. There may have been better actors but were there any better stars.

Is John Wayne America or is America John Wayne? I can't tell which came first or which is which as everytime I think of America I think of Wayne and when I think of Wayne I think America. Only Jimmy Stewart achieved that similar American iconography though in his much softer way. Wayne's features as though cut from American stone from the Wild West, gave a face to the honest decency of American values and audiences around the world ever since have been spellbound by that brand of honesty.

'Just' is the word. He is just beyond everything. Just the greatest movie star cinema has ever given us.

Just John Wayne.
