Max Ernst (born at Bruhl near Cologne in 1891). His artistic development led him from Futurism to Cubism, Expressionism, the Dada-movement and finally in 1924 to Surrealism. He was regarded as one of the initiators of this latter movement which aimed at the re-creation of magic effects through poetry and imagination.
Through the montage of dissociated elements he created intensely vivid compositions which stimulate the imagination.
Although Max Ernst's palette was of the French school, his lyrical landscapes revived German romanticism and its expression of nature.
