It's a toss up which is the more enjoyable, this or the one that came after, Tin Drum, which cemented Japan's reputation as a band far ahead of their time. It's all subjective but I still think Gentlemen is the album when they hit their zenith. Take Ain't That Peculiar out of the equation (Japan always seemed to go through the motions when they did covers, at least to my ears) and you have the perfect album. Smoothly melodic in a Roxy Music-esque type of way and yet it is Japan and could be made by no other. That last sentence doesn't make sense and yet it does. In Nightporter you can hear the ghost (no pun intended) of Erik Satie rising from his French grave and producing music for the 1980s. Haunting, stunningly haunting, like no other song from the 1980s could possibly approach with the exception of Ghosts or Forbidden Colours. Atmospheric, of Parisian angst and mists and fogs, of tall sash windows with ghosty figures looking out and tall Victorian Parisian entrances ... It's the stand out track for me though each will have their own favourite. Imagine Sylvian meeting Satie. Boy, what an album they would have made similar to the two with Czukay but then it would have been what Heaven was made for. And more. If you are looking for a beginner's guide to Japan then this is it. Get into Japan (remember the hand and the trousers ... naughty but inspired PR!) as they said nearly 40 years ago now. Time does fly. I would venture to say that the album cover is one of the most iconic of the 1980s though this CD release is slightly different from the vinyl LP release and earlier CD releases. The photographer Stuart McLeod can claim responsibility for creating something that will be remembered for as long as people listen to 80s music. Another time, another place. It's a kind of Marilyn Monroe Seven Year Itch white dress moment for 1980s music. Condition: new - still sealed.
