All the beautiful items, from Weatherbox to the Trophies trilogy can be traced back to this book. This was the first; this kick started the market where other artists looked beyond the music and tried to represent their work as artistically accurate as possible. The obvious imitator was Nick Rhodes and Interference but there are others, many others. And yet the format of the book is pretty straightforward, pretty standard (unlike the aforementioned items). It's what's inside the book that makes it astonishing. Page upon page of his beautuful assemblages of polaroids, each polaroid clevely playing with perspective which reminds me of Anthony Green's work. Clearly influenced by David Hockney's polaroids, they are not a pastiche of them, rather Sylvian has followed his own path and produced works that are his alone. Visually, the making of the polaroids was documented in Preparations for a Journey, a fascinating insight into the laborious process of creating each work. The docu was released in Japan only. The prices for the book have soared since it was released. If you were willing to part with the £17 at the time then you made a good investment. Even though the Sylvian market has decreased since the heady days of his first three solo albums, the price for the book remains high. There are still a few hardcore Sylvian collectors out there, make no mistake. Some came signed and some came with big postcards. Those that were standard release came with neither signature nor cards. There was a Japanese version released at the same time, produced by Sakamoto's publishing company and limited to 500 copes. Lordy, I have to say it is the most beautiful book I have ever seen. It opens out like a Buddha script and is totally impratical. You only get it out once for it is so delicate you are worried you might damage it. Rare as hell as well - I think I've seen two or three in fifteen years.
