E-mail your thoughts on one of Britain's most loved actors. I won't put up your e-mail address - just your first name and where you are from if you decide to leave that.
Richard Todd
When I was seven, Disney came out with the first of three live action films
starring Richard Todd, and I fell hopelessly in love to the tune of "Whistle My
Love". In the 60 years since, I have stayed a fan of this great actor. At one
time or another, I've seen most of his films and admired his work where even the
second rate films were improved just because he was there. He will be missed by
all who appreciate talent.

I have just learnt while searching the net that Richard Todd died several years ago, and I am very sad to learn this and the circumstances.
Richard Todd was my favorite film star. His beautiful face made my heart beat faster - I was not surprised to learn that he was also a gentleman and lovely human being. - Kaye, Australia
Richard Todd
I have been reading the tributes to Richard Todd and they say everything I felt about him. I was born right after D-Day in London and came over to the US as a small child. I first saw him in his Robin Hood role serialized on the Mickey Mouse Club and from then on he was and still is my favorite actor. Like Ellen, I gleaned the TV Guide looking for his movies. When I was around 9 or 10 I started The Richard Todd Fan Club with 3 of my girlfriends. I wrote to him and received an autographed photo. I can't tell you how much time I spent staring at it. I just wish I still had it. Until recently I never knew of his gallantry in World War II. He was such an example of "The Greatest Generation". He had his share of heartbreak in his life but he seemed to bear it with strength and dignity. It was unfortunate that he was never given his proper recognition by being knighted by the Queen. May he rest in peace.

Richard Todd
I was deeply saddened when I learned of the news concerning the death of Richard Todd. He is my favorite British actor of all time. As a boy growing up, I used to watch The Longest Day all the time. I always enjoyed the scene with the gliders. Little did I know as a small boy that Major John Howard in the movie was portrayed by Lt. Richard Todd of the 7th Para (He was promoted to Captain by the end of the war). I've become very interested in the history of the British Airborne and have read many books on the subject including Todd's autobiography "Caught in the Act." He was humble about his service during the war, but in my mind he was a hero. He could have stayed out of active service, but in the same way as Jimmy Stewart and David Niven - he served. Thanks Richard for all the great movies, but most of all Thank you Captain Todd for your service to your nation.

I have watched Richard in films since I was only 5 years old as mum always adored him. I have a great collection of Richards's movies. A death drum along the River is a stand out and of course the Dam Busters. I must disagree with comparing Russell Crowe with Richard Todd as you cannot compare a Grand master of English theatre and movie with the portrayal of the modern day actor and the way movies are made today with all the special effects.
Richard Todd will always be in my heart as any movies that he starred in you always know your eyes would be glued to the screen till the end. That's how grand Richard Todd's ability was to make his character more interesting and this really was and extension of his real personality. You had to love him for it.
As for Robin Hood Errol Flynn is up there and so is Richard Todd. If I had to choose a gentleman in real life this is the way I would rank the three actors. 1. Richard Todd 2. Russell Crow 3. Errol Flynn.
God bless you Richard Todd you will always bi in my mind and thoughts forever, and as long as I keep buying his movies he will never die in the hearts of all English, Irish and any other countryman from all over the world who has the sense to recognise Mastery at it best.

Was extremely sad to hear of the death last December of an actor I had great respect for. I saw your site when looking him up on the net and felt I had to write and give my respects to the great man.
I met Richard Todd when he was in Alice Springs Australia playing a Vet in the play Equus. I spent one lovely day in his company. Below is a photograph at Stanley Chasm. He was a gentleman and a great actor.

Thank you for the opportunity to express my condolences, and, my gratitude to an extraordinary man. As a new teen-ager in the mid-fifties and then in the sixties, I had a heart-aching crush on this man, so I am not surprised to read of all the women my age confessing the same. I saw most of his movies and many of them multiple times. I have read all the tribute letters and I could have written most of them. What an amazing effect this man had on people. I had no personal contact with him but felt I knew him personally and I see that he affected most of you the same way. His charisma was palpable, his integrity unquestionable, his valour undeniable. I, too, am wondering why he was not knighted??? Upon hearing of his passing, I felt such a sense of loss and reading all the tributes has helped. I fear we will never see his like again. James Stewart, Gregory Peck, Cary Grant, Richard Todd. An era has truly come to a close. God bless you Mr. Todd and may you be happily reunited with your two sons. We will all miss you.

Richard Todd
There is currently a big deal being made out of Russell Crowe playing Robin Hood. The first time I saw this movie it was with the Late Great Richard Todd, if ever there was a man to swoon over, it was him. He was so good in that role, I could imagine what it would have been like to have seen him and meet him in person. To me, there is only one Robin Hood and only one, that is Richard Todd, Russell Crowe is a very poor imitation, he doesn't even come close. Rest in Peace and May God Bless.

I've always enjoyed his work on the screen but especially admired the way he lived his life. Every time one of his movies is on TV I make a point to watch it. He is definitely one of the great ones

Tribute to Richard Todd
The wonderful thing about reading all of the tributes is the realization that there are so many who admired Richard Todd the way I did. I was a teenager when I discovered him in the '50s when his career was in full swing here in the States. To me, he epitomized the perfect man and gentleman. Just to hear him speak was intoxicating! I have since seen all of his movies, read his autobiography, and was so thrilled to see him in a play in London in 1985. He graciously sent autographed pictures prior to my going because I told him of a friend who was so disappointed she couldn't see him live, too. By all accounts, this great actor was a kind man, and we all know of his heroic World War II actions. I am appalled that both the Oscar and BAFTA award ceremonies omitted him from their memorial clips. What could they have been thinking? Shame on them! Thankfully, his many fans will never forget him and the impact his performances have have on them.

I also remember Richard Todd in The Longest Day and many other movies. I just watched The Dam Busters this morning, February 2, 2010 on Turner Classic Movies. It tends to make me choke up a little every time I hear the music and see Mr. Todd walking away at the end of the movie. He was a very strong and fine gentleman and actor. I am very sorry that he is gone. He will be missed by all of his fans and friends. My condolences go out to his family.

I’m watching the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards and just learned he’s gone! I have loved him for so long, I wonder if any man in my life has ever been able to live up to the ideal he presented. He was gorgeous! He was such a talent! He was my “idol”. God bless you my dear, dear man!

Richard Todd
I had the honour (and it WAS an honour) to meet Richard Todd at a local fete two summers ago. Such a gentleman and still so handsome. I also saw him at Chichester (theatre) and there was a collective "intake of breath" from the entire audience when he made his first entrance. He would have been about 85 then but still very charistmatic. What a pity he was not knighted not only for services to entertainment but for his own real life bravery in the 2nd world war.
A great loss.

I was a great fan and loved his films. I was deeply sorry to hear of Richard’s passing not only from life but now into history.
Condolences to his family on their very great loss.

Richard Todd
How sad that the wonderful Richard Todd is gone. When I was a teen I saw every one of his Disney films and collected everything I could find on him. I adored him. When I married and had children, I named my second son Peter because Mr. Todd's performance in A Man called Peter was so inspirational that it led me to read the book and know Dr. Peter Marshall himself. In later years I was thrilled any time he made an appearance. I feel that a part of my life is gone.

My sympathy to the Todd family. He was one of the world's greatest actors as
well as a war hero.
He will be long remembered.

Richard Todd
My sympathies to Mr Todd and his family at this sad time. Mr Todd spent some time in recent weeks as a respite guest at the Cedars in Bourne, Lincolnshire. He apparently revelled in watching his old films and insisted that his fellow guests did the same. It must have given Mr Todd great pleasure to remember his early productions and those he worked with and where at a time when he was full of vigour. He once revealed his sense of humour by sending himself up: 'My image was all daring deeds, until my swash began to buckle a bit'.
He lived only eight miles from me and I'd have loved to have met him. I hoped I might have bumped into him at Ropsley - the next village on from where he lived - as he sometimes attended village hall events. There are very few male actors left now in world cinema who were a lead prior to 1950. It's very sad that the living links with an era that gave, and continues to give, so much pleasure to so many is almost at an end. At least Mr Todd's memory will live on in his films, autobiography, and, of course, his children. He left his mark.

I'm a New Zealander born in the 60's but Richard Todd was one of my favourite British actors. I loved his performance in Hasty Heart, A Man called Peter and to me he was epitome of an Englishman in The Dambusters. Ironic really as I see he was born in Dublin. The fact he served his country in WWII just increases my respect for him.
My condolences to his family and I am sure we will never see an actor of his calibre again. RIP

I was very sad to hear of Richard Todd's passing and I send my condolences to his family. When I was about 16 (a long time ago) I wrote to him and he sent me a photo of himself and his then wife Catherine which I treasured for many year and is now lost.
My favourite film of all time is :The Dambusters" Love the story and the acting was great.
