Sassetta was one of the most important Sienese 15th-century painters. He assimilated into his work the style of the painters from the previous century with not only the new trends coming from the North but the International Gothic style. He was heavily influenced by painters such as Masolini and Gentile da Fabriano.

The best example of his work is the altarpiece for S. Francesco, Sansepolcro (1437-44). It is now dismembered, with the central panel of St Francis in Glory belonging to Harvard Univ. in Florence, and the greater part of it being in the National Gallery in London and the Louvre in Paris.

First recorded work is an altarpiece in 1423-6 (parts of it survive, in Siena, Barnard Castle (Bowes Mus.), Budapest, Melbourne and the Vatican).
