An eye-opener in more senses than one, this great surrealist masterpiece - co-written by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali - still has the power to shock. Starting with an open razor (wielded by Buhuel) slicing a girl's eyeball, this short film goes on to clash lyrical images with violent ideas to show how love is held back by tradition.

Not as meaningless as it seems, and as anti-clerical as Bunuel was to become in all his later films, it still has enormous intensity.
