Without any modesty I feel my photos are doing for London what Atget did for Paris and Abbott did for New York! If words like 'genius' and 'visionary' are used to describe the photos then I wouldn't argue with that.
With that in mind I'm really only interested in old unusual buildings to match my genius and here are the top three of my current favourite Victorian follies.
- St. Clement Danes Almshouses, aka Diprose Lodge, in Garratt Lane, South London, SW18. It's a walled estate in Summerstown.
- The Royal Victoria Patriotic Building. Built in the 1850s it is the finest example of Victorian Gothic that I have seen. Just a jaw-droppingly splendour that once seen never forgotten. I remember seeing it for the first time, going past it on the top deck of the No. 77 bus, and just being blown away by it. Try and see it for yourself, and if you can then go at night when its gothic splendour is lit up and peers out of the darkness, a kind of call to Victorialand.
They are now flats selling at around the half a million mark. Great to live inside, I should think: the only drawback I can think of is when you gaze outside your window you aren't looking onto The Royal Victoria Patriotic Building! Maybe they should put up a life-size mirror outside to alleviate this problem?
Food for thought for buyers I feel.
It is at John Archer Way, SW18.
- Mary Tate's Cottages, at 14 Cricket Green, Mitcham. Overlooking the cricket green they are the finest things to see in Mitcham and are so charming that you can actually forget your are only 5 minutes walk from a McDonalds.
