As far as I know rock & pop photo patches were really a product and fad of the 1980s. It is lost in the midst of time exacty who came up with the idea or why. Usually patches have been either woven or printed. The only reason I can come up with is that a photo would bear an exact resemblance to the rock star whereas the woven or printed patch type can't.
Whatever the reason they are pretty rare now and as such are collectible. I like them as they capture a moment as it was.
AC/DC have always been a visually stunning group. Leave the music aside, the visual look of their release are now iconic.
The patch perfectly captures that iconography.
