Painted during his mature years, the work demonstrates how powerfully he could transform the landscape into something deeply personal and expressive. Rather than depicting nature with academic realism, Schiele reduces the trees to twisting forms and intricate patterns of line. Their branches seem almost alive, reaching across the composition with the nervous energy that characterises so much of his work. Even without human figures, the landscape possesses a distinctly emotional presence. The painting belongs to a remarkable series of landscapes created around the final years of Schiele's life. Influenced by the Austrian countryside yet filtered through his highly individual vision, these works transformed fields, villages, and trees into decorative arrangements of colour and form. Autumn held a particular fascination for Schiele. The season's fading colours and bare branches offered imagery that echoed themes of change, fragility, and the passing of time. Yet there is also beauty and vitality here, with the rich tones of the landscape creating a sense of warmth amid decline. Today Autumn Trees is admired for its unusual combination of decorative elegance and emotional depth, revealing that Schiele's genius extended far beyond the figure paintings for which he is best known.

She it was who demanded that the artist cut out of his life as a girlfriend and model his great muse, Wally. In the earlier part of their marriage she was Schiele's only nude model. It was only after she put on weight that other women were brought in to model for him. (Or scroll down for images and details. Lenin is a participant in the eBay (EPN) affiliate program) |
