Painter
- Frans Snyders was a pupil of Pieter Bruegel the Younger. He
travelled in Italy in 1608—9 and on his return settled in Antwerp, where he
was much employed by Rubens on the still-life and animal parts of his hunting
and other pictures. He also worked with Jordaens, and on his own account
produced many vigorous hunting scenes and large still-life subjects of great
complexity. He married a sister of the de Vos brothers.
There are examples in the Royal Coll., and in Antwerp, Berlin, Boston (Mus.), Brussels, Cape
Town, Dresden, Edinburgh (NG), The Hague, London (NG, Kenwood),
Madrid, Munich, Ottawa, Paris (Louvre) and Toronto.
