The first thing you notice about this book is its size. It's monumentally huge. One of the most awesome art book I have seen and the size perfectly captures the power of O'Keeffe's work.
Georgia O’Keeffe stands out as one of the great American artists of the 20th century. With her exceptionally keen powers of observation and fine, controlled brushwork, she was able to capture and communicate her individualistic response to the raw brilliance of nature to a wide audience. Her emotionally tender, intimate and compelling paintings fused an American style with a European sensibility which, together with her artistic brilliance, revolutionized modern art in her time and continues to influence artists to this day. Known mostly for her large canvasses of magnificent flowers, O’Keeffe’s work was far broader than that. The themes she painted were rooted in the natural world that she loved so dearly; the subjects she returned to again and again were landscapes, trees and flowers, as well as objects that she found around her: apples and avocados, a North American Indian doll or the bones, shells and stones that she collected in South Carolina, Texas, New York and New Mexico.
This book presents over 100 of Georgia O’Keeffe’s works in spectacular giant size. The chapters are arranged chronologically tracing the journey she made through life - from her early work to living in New York and her relationship with Alfred Stieglitz, her growing confidence as she became more independent and, finally in her later years, revisiting the abstract forms that initially had brought her to
Stieglitz’s attention and so to fame.
