Jacqueline Bisset was born on 13 September 1944 in Weybridge, Surrey, England. Her birth name was Winifred Jacqueline Fraser-Bisset. Her father, Max Fraser Bisset, was a doctor, and her mother, Arlette Alexander, had been a lawyer in France before marriage. She has an older brother, also named Max. Her last name is typically pronounced to rhyme with "Kiss it" or "illicit".
Her mother and brother had been evacuated to Weybridge due to wartime bombings. Her father was working in a hospital in Iceland at the time. Jacqueline grew up in a 400-year-old cottage in Tilehurst, near Reading. She and her brother played together, sometimes roughly, and she recalls once breaking a stool over his head. Jacqueline took ballet classes, but her cramped feet convinced her to give up ballet.
At age fifteen, her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, requiring Jacqueline to take on significant responsibility for her care. Her parents eventually divorced. Jacqueline has never married and has no children.
At sixteen, Jacqueline was enrolled in the Lycée Français to learn French before university. Instead of pursuing college, she became interested in cinema and began modeling to earn money for acting lessons.
Jacqueline began modeling in London at age eighteen, working with top photographers including Terry Donovan and David Bailey. Her first unbilled film role was in Richard Lester's "The Knack...and How to Get It" (1965). She progressed to small supporting roles in 1967 and then to larger supporting roles in major films and starring roles in smaller productions from 1968-1969.
She experienced bursts of fame in 1968 when she replaced Mia Farrow in "The Detective" opposite Frank Sinatra, and again in 1977 when her role in "The Deep" put her on magazine covers worldwide. For a full overview, see her filmography.
Jacqueline has never been married. She has had several long-term relationships, including Michael Sarrazin, Victor Drai, Alexander Godunov, Vincent Perez, and most recently Emin Boztepe. Hollywood rumors have linked her with co-stars, but such claims are unverified.
She met Michael Sarrazin in 1968 while filming "The Sweet Ride". They lived together in a small cottage and later starred together in "Believe in Me". They separated in 1974. She later had a relationship with Victor Drai in Paris, then Alexander Godunov in the 1980s. During filming of "Le Maison de Jade" in 1987, she became involved with Vincent Perez. Since 1997, she has often been seen with Emin Boztepe, a martial arts instructor.
