This portrait is competent and factual, and was painted to please the artist's parents at a time when Lowry was struggling to master the rudiments of academic drawing and painting as a part time student at the Muncipal College of Art in Manchester
It was in this year also that he wrote applying for a job with The Pall Mall Property Company Ltd.. He remained with this firm until his 65th birthday in 1952 when he was retired on full pension. During his lifetime only a few close friends knew the details of his employment.
