Graz, Austria 1894 - London 1944
Carl Meyer started his film career in 1919 with the scripts for the two archetypal expressionist films, Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari/The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920, co-author Hans Janowitz) and Genuine (1920), both directed by Robert Wiene. After these successes, his name became more closely associated with psychological dramas such as Hintertreppe/Backstairs (1921), Scherben/Shattered (1921), and Sylvester (1923) which helped initiate the Kammerspielfilm.
Because he was 'writing films' rather than merely writing for film, Mayer is not adequately described as 'scriptwriter' and it seems clear that the extraordinary detailed specifications he gave did guide the hands and eyes of directors, cameramen and set designers.
Other films include: Brandherd (1920); Der Gang in die Nacht (1920); Die Strabe (1923); Tartuff (1926)
