On the run following a bank robbery in Mexico, outlaw Dad Longworth double-crosses his partner in crime, Rio, and makes off with their haul of stolen gold. Jailed for the crime, Rio harbours thoughts of revenge during the long years behind bars. When at last he succeeds in breaking out of prison, Rio goes looking for Longworth. The intervening years have seen Dad elevated to the role of sheriff - but he still lives in fear that Rio will one day catch up with him...
Two Hollywood icons were reunited in this classic western from 1961. Marlon Brando and Karl Malden, previously starring together in On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire, took the lead roles, while an astonishing array of writing, direction and production talent was involved at various stages in the film’s creation: Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone), Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs) and Calder Willingham (The Graduate) worked on the screenplay; Walter Seltzer (The Omega Man) and George Glass (Death of a Salesman) jointly produced; the film earned an Oscar nomination for cinematographer Charles Lang. As well as giving an electrifying performance as the tormented desperado, Rio, Brando himself finally took on the role of director, taking over from Stanley Kubrick. One-Eyed Jacks remains the only film directed by Marlon Brando.
Shooting began on One Eyed Jacks on December 2, 1958, and continued for six months.
Locations included Death Valley and on the Monterey Coast.
The buget was initially two million dollars; it soared to six million.
Brando shot a million feet of film. The rough draft took five hours to watch.
Paramount tacked on a "happy" ending.
Karl Malden later said: "If we'd made it the way Marlon wanted it to be made, like a Greek Tradegy, it could have been a breakthrough western. It could have been a classic."
