Robert Bresson, the greatest exponent of the 20th Century in making 'Minimal' work, used the original transcripts from the trial as a foundation for the film and such authenticity underpins the power of the film. It's quite short though at just over an hour, what they call a 'featurette'.
The lead, Florence Carrez, is a bit all over the place at times and Renée Falconetti she is not but holds it together enough to give a credible performance.
It's the final shot though which is really the Coup de grace.
The Dvd packaging is classic Artificial Eye - the photos from the film are always incorporated into the primary AE colours and text. It does work as for generations now anyone with a passing interest in World Cinema would know an Artificial Eye Dvd or video from a 100 paces.
I wonder what Joan of Arc really looked like. I know of all the portraits that came after her but as far as I know there is just one picture of her done in real time and that was a small doodle found in the manuscript of her trial.
A title like this wouldn't sale in the numbers you would possibly think. I would hazard a guess (and it is a rough guess), based on various sources, that in the whole of the UK this would sale 1 or 2 copies a week. So by buying it you really are joining an exclusive club.
