I mean he was always watchable (and listenable) throughout his career but in the mid 60s he had a kind of huge screen presence reserved for the greats like Brando or Garbo. He's as gritty as gritty can get on the big screen and though the supporting case, especialy Claire Bloom, are good it's really Burton who mesmerises and is the heartbeat of the movie.
