Frank Auerbach’s Self-Portrait (1958) is a compelling work created using charcoal and chalk on paper. This piece measures approximately 76.8 × 56.5 cm. Auerbach is known for his intense and expressive style, and this self-portrait is no exception. The drawing is part of a series of large-scale portrait heads he produced during the 1950s and early 1960s.
Auerbach’s technique involved working and reworking his drawings over extended periods, which often resulted in richly textured and layered pieces. This process reflects the post-war context in which he was working, capturing the struggle and resilience of the time.
