| Leonardo da Vinci Artist/Renaissance Man Leonardo was born at Vinci, the illegitimate son of a Florentine notary, but wasbrought up in his father's house and trained as a painter, traditionally under Verrocchio. He is said to have painted the left-hand angel in Verrocchio's Baptism (Florence, Uffizi), as a result of which Verrocchio gave up painting. On stylistic grounds there is every reason to accept the truth of the story, and Verrocchio may well have felt that: he could stick to sculpture if he could haveso good a painter in the firm; for it is certainly true that Leonardo was living in Verrocchio's house in 1476, presumably as his assistant, since in that year ananonymous accusation of homosexuality which was made against him says so.
