Stanley Baldwin (1867 - 1947) ~ Trivia

Random trivia I've picked up on Stanley Baldwin. I will add to the page when time permits and I have any kind of encouragement. You know, even a 'share' gives one encouragement. I don't need much!

  • If you have any trivia or photos you would like to share please e-mail me here (ihuppert5@aol.com) and I will add it. It would be great to build this up into something substantial on the great man that as many people as possible could share. A fact a day keeps the doubters away. I just made that up! Or maybe I heard it someplace else and am recycling it. Can't remember.

  • Stanley Baldwin (1867–1947) is one of the most significant modern British politicians, but also one of the most controversial and puzzling. As Conservative leader and three times prime minister, Baldwin presided over the beginning of his party's long twentieth-century dominance. He did so in new and difficult conditions: the onset of modern democratic politics, the rise of Labour, chronic economic depression, the General Strike, persistent newspaper attacks, imperial discontent, the Abdication, and the threats from Mussolini and Hitler.-Book: Stanley Baldwin

  • In November 1929, Baldwin said: "...that if the time comes when the party which I lead ceases to attract to itself men of the calibre of Edward Wood [Irwin later Halifax the Viceroy], then I have finished with my party.' (Hansard, 5th Series, vol. 231, col. 1306)

  • Stanley Baldwin later 1st Earl Baldwin of Bewdley.

  • Attended Harrow as did Prime Ministers Churchill, Peel and Palmerston.

  • One of his favourite holiday destinations was Aix - les - Bains.

  • Referred to the build - up to the Abdication as 'the King's matter'.

  • Received a salary of £2,000 as Lord President of the Council.

  • Appointed Churchill as Chancellor of the Exchequor.

  • Conservative Prime Minister 22 May 1923 - 22 January 1924.

  • Conservative Prime Minister 4 November 1924 - 5 June 1929.

  • Conservative/National Government Prime Minister 7 June 1935 - 28 May 1937.

  • In late May 1937, was relaced by Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister.
