The key works in the career of this Pre Raphaelite guru. I think of the three at the centre of the PRB, Holman Hunt lags slightly behind Rosetti and John Everett Millais in terms of fame. I think that's down to the sheer overwhelming personality of Rossetti that towers over the history of the Pre Raphaelites like Brueghel's Towel of Babel, and when Hunt's great friend Millais painted Ophelia he created one of the most beautiful works in the history of art.
How do you compete with him or that?
But I think that is unfair for if you look at the body of work below I have to say that it more than holds its own with the work of those two.
I sometimes wish that Holman Hunt's work could be stripped of the PRB tag (though it is in nature PRB personified) and allowed a life of its own. For if it stood alone it would hold its own with almost any artist both past and present.
And he had one of the most awesome beards I've ever seen. With a beard like that, he must have been a genius.
